Legacy Giving

Karen and Fred"As long time proud supporters of the EAC and with passionate concerns for the environment, it was easy for my husband and me to decide to leave a gift to the EAC in our wills. I have also been Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for a number of years and can attest to the fact that the EAC is a very well run, competent and effective organization. We can be sure that our gift will be put to good use.

We have long respected the work EAC does for the environment and know that its strong voice must continue into the future.  We are happy to help make that happen and we encourage others to consider leaving a legacy to EAC as well."

-Karen Hollett (with husband Fred Harrington)

You can help protect the environment for future generations by including a gift in your will to the Ecology Action Centre.

Your generous commitment to support environmental protection beyond your lifetime ensures that EAC will have the long term financial support needed to keep our voice independent and strong for years to come.

The gift you choose can also bring significant tax benefits for you, now and in the future.

How to get started

There are several ways to plan a legacy gift. The two most common planned gifts are bequests and life insurance policies

Bequest

A bequest is a percentage of your estate or a specified dollar amount which is gifted to the EAC through your will.

Although the gift is planned by you when you prepare your will, it does not come into effect for the EAC until you have passed on.

Gifts may be unrestricted or designated for a particular issue that is of particular interest to you.

A sample bequest for unrestricted use may read:

To pay to the Ecology Action Centre ___ percentage share of my estate (or a sum of $__) to be used for such purposes of the Charity as its Board of Directors may from time to time determine; and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer of the Ecology Action Centre or other person properly authorized to give receipts shall be sufficient discharge for the same.

Life Insurance Policy

The gift of an insurance policy can take place by transferring the ownership of a paid policy, purchasing a new policy naming EAC as owner or naming EAC as the beneficiary of a policy.  When you transfer ownership of an existing policy to EAC, you receive a tax credit for the cash surrender value.

Other Ways to Give

In addition to a bequest in your will or the gift of a life insurance policy, we’d be happy to talk with you about other ways to give:

  • Gifts of real estate, artwork, jewellery or collectibles
  • Gifts of a RRSP or RRIF
  • Bequests of stocks, bonds or mutual funds
  • Annuities
  • Charitable Remainder Trusts

Benefits of Legacy Gifts

The gift you choose can have significant tax benefits for you, now and in the future.  We encourage you to consider planned giving and to speak with your lawyer, accountant or insurer about the benefits to you.

Donations may be anonymous or, if you give us permission, we would love to acknowledge you as part of our Earth Legacy Family.
