In its latest move to consolidate power, the Houston government is considering introducing "strong mayor" powers for municipalities in Nova Scotia. This could mean that mayors and wardens would have disproportionate and undemocratic powers over decision making. In places like Ontario, this has given mayors the ability to:
- Propose and pass bylaws without the majority support of council
- Veto bylaws
- Hire and fire department heads and the CAO at their discretion
- And more
In Canada, these powers have been given in cases where provincial governments are looking for mayors to align municipal decisions with provincial political priorities. Strong democratic processes are fundamental to our rights and freedoms. Send a message to your MLA, Premier Houston and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing John Lohr, urging them to abandon "strong mayor" powers!
