How to Talk About Climate Change

How to Talk About Climate Change

... and why it's important.

Surveys show that the majority of people worldwide are concerned about climate change – but most of us do not talk about climate change with others. And that's a problem! Climate silence fuels inaction, and we need action now, more than ever.

But how do we bring up this complicated topic? How do we stay grounded? What if we don't have the technical language to talk about climate change?

Join us at a How to Talk About Climate Change workshop!

  • When: Thursday, August 13, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: South End Halifax, Dalhousie Student Union Building, Room 303 (6136 University Ave)

In this practical workshop, co-hosted by Kate Brooks from the EAC and Nancy Blair from Nova Scotia Climate Cafés, you'll learn:

  • how (and why) to talk about climate change in your everyday life
  • how to find connection and create a supportive space for conversation
  • how to lead with curiosity and avoid getting triggered
  • how to make climate conversations a part of your climate action toolkit

What is a Climate Café?

What is a Climate Café?

A climate café is a safe place to talk about what and how we are feeling.  This includes storytelling, but goes way past that.

It is a place where we know we will be safe and respected; we know that talking about climate change is not always appreciated or accepted.

In climate cafés, we may bring emotions such as sorrow, anxiety, anger and grief.  We may also celebrate and rejoice in "successes."  We need this place and this time as we move more deeply into climate change and the new climate.  Sometimes we will feel hopeful; sometimes we will feel despair.

Climate cafés are a place where individuals gain like-minded friends and the strength and to go out into the fight again.

She was one of the founders of Nova Scotia Climate Cafés, an organization that leads three Climate Cafés monthly in-person and on-line. Nancy has shared her counselling practice with two retired greyhound co-therapists, Tyson and Taurus.
