Biodiversity

Safeguarding ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity all combine to support the prevention of biodiversity loss. Given the tremendous impact of this form of loss to human and animal life, now is the time to act. Nova Scotia must move into the future in a positive, sustainable manner that respects and encourages biodiversity.

Biodiversity Act (Bill 4)

Biodiversity Act (Bill 4)

Comprehensive biodiversity management supported through legislation was introduced in the Nova Scotia legislature in 2019 and later replaced with a more robust version in 2021. The latter, Bill 4: An Act to Provide for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Nova Scotia, was defeated due to a misinformation campaign introduced just prior to its third and final reading.

We have worked with community partners, including East Coast Environmental Law, in support of a legal framework that would contain proactive, constructive mechanisms for working on biodiversity loss, including through education, and collaborating with community groups. One example of that work is the preparation of a report offering recommendations from those in the biodiversity and environmental law communities.
