Letter from EAC's Interim Executive Director, Maggy Burns

This year, Earth Day takes on an extra special significance for the Ecology Action Centre. As you may know, 2021 marks our 50th anniversary as an organization!

I find it remarkable to look back over a half-century of successes, failures, laughter and experimentation, and all the people who’ve been part of that journey. Our victories and struggles are those of our dedicated staff and volunteers, our members, our friends and our allies, and we couldn’t have made it here without your support.

Our shared history has taught us that when we work together – even against incredible odds – we make amazing things happen. From the first recycling program in Nova Scotia, to stopping what would have been the world’s largest nuclear power complex, to helping protect thousands of kilometers of our land and oceans, and everything in between, I’m proud of the impact we’ve had in our province and beyond.

We see our 50th birthday year as an opportunity to connect with the people and actions that are woven throughout EAC’s story. As we stare down multiple ecological and social crises, working together to shape our collective future is more important than ever. It’s our connections to each other that fuel our hope for a just, sustainable world. One where we take care of the ecosystems that support us, and no one is left behind.

So, I invite you to join us! We’ll be celebrating our shared history and envisioning our future in a variety of ways. This includes yesterday’s online panel discussion Shaping Change: Intergenerational Conversations on Activism (click here to watch the recording) and our upcoming collaboration with Zuppa Theatre Co.50 Things: a province-wide, interactive art adventure celebrating a half-century of the Ecology Action Centre.

I’m thrilled about this opportunity to work with Zuppa Theatre Co. l love their unique brand of playful, provocative, and collaborative work — exactly how EAC rolls! We will be working with 50 artists from across the province to bring to life the stories of the past 50 years and ignite our visions for the future, and we can’t wait for you to join us.

If you have a story about the EAC, whether it’s a protest, a meeting, a chance encounter, or how EAC’s work has affected your life, email us at info@ecologyaction.ca so we can share it with our community. We’d love to hear from you!

We’ll be announcing more events and opportunities to engage soon, so keep an eye out.

EAC’s story is written by the countless individuals and groups who have dedicated themselves to the vision of an equitable, sustainable future here in Mi’kma’ki and beyond. It is the passion and tireless work of our staff, volunteers, members and supporters that have made the last 50 years possible, and we can’t wait to see what the next 50 hold.

Happy Earth Day from your friends and allies at the EAC. Thank you for being a part of our story.  Here’s to the next 50 years of action!

In gratitude,
Maggy Burns
