The Halifax Bike Shed is a 50+ initiative, based on the principles of Men’s Sheds, that creates opportunities for senior adults of all genders to work together and repair bikes for the benefit of the community.
Through this senior-led initiative, Bike Shed members maintain or re-establish vital social connections in a welcoming space. The activities of the Bike Shed increase a sense of meaning in members' lives, as well as facilitating a cycle of mentoring in bike repair and service to the community. Donated bikes are repaired and gifted to community members who experience a variety of challenges in meeting their daily needs. The bikes offer recipients a measure of independence in transportation.
Tools and parts are included in the workshop space; mentoring is offered as needed.
Although the Bike Shed's primary focus is on providing donated bikes to the community, members are also able to repair personal bikes, contribute to the maintenance of the workshop and repair bikes to assist other programs that use the space, when needed.
